Synopsis:

When 72-year-old Bert Fournier, a quiet French postman, loses his secret lover, Nigel—a Black Lesotho-born baker who fled apartheid—he embarks on an improbable journey to scatter Nigel’s ashes in his ancestral village in Lesotho, deep in the Drakensberg Mountains. Armed with a rickety roadside scooter, a crumpled map, and Nigel’s ashes in a coffee tin, Bert stumbles into a world of breathtaking landscapes, lively braais, and Basotho traditions.

But his journey is anything but smooth. Lost in the wilderness and haunted by a battered pickup truck that seems to follow his every move, Bert fears the worst. Yet when the truck’s occupants finally reveal themselves, they turn out to be Nigel’s estranged family, sent to help him after hearing of his mission.

As he bonds with Nigel’s relatives and embraces the culture Nigel had cherished, Bert confronts his own fears and regrets, while his exploits become an international spectacle. From awkward dances to heartwarming connections, Bert discovers not only the courage to honor Nigel’s memory but also the strength to face his estranged wife and son back in France.

"Big Bird In A Small Cage" is a heartwarming dramedy about love, identity, and finding belonging in the unlikeliest places, proving that even the most impossible journeys can lead to redemption.
